Healing In-The-Making: Improvisational Explorations in The Post-Pandemic Era

Through improvisation, movement/stillness, sensory observation & sonic imagery, and by investigating in concepts such as affect, abstract possibilities, mind/body non-separability, we attempted to find healing in exploring interrelations between the notion of space, limitations and the pandemic; solidarity building and listening; memory of objects, pain and self expression; sensory experience of togetherness and musicking.

  • The first edition of the "Healing In-The-Making: Improvisational Explorations In The Post-Pandemic Era" Workshop took place in Tehran, Iran in Feb 2022, Led by Anoush Moazzeni.

  • The participants were given brief explanations about the art therapy & the impact of art-craft making in healing processes, the improvisational practices in music and sound arts, and community-based art works. They were also presented to notions and theories such as: affect theory, the virtual and mind/body non-seperabability. The participants then investigated in group activities and meditation sessions to reflect on different matters that arose within group discussions.

  • Inspired by contemporary improvisational techniques in Dance and Drama, the participants started exploring and developing embodied experiences of exchange, care, sympathy, intersensory listening (a form of active and receptive attention) within movement and stillness in group dynamics.

  • Social Dreaming, Words, Matter and Their Behold Meanings....

  • Automatic Writing: Each participant could write/draw down her/his/their struggles, hard times and bad memories of the pandemic. Others then took a look at their peer's writings/drawings and chose those that resonated the most with them...

  • Sonic and Musical Interpretation of Linguistic Materialization of Inner Worlds...

  • Participants attempted to discuss their selceted words with the group and to elaborate around their found common worlds, lived experiences and senses with sound and movement.

  • Inner World, Space, Affect and Abstract Possibilities...

  • The participants were asked to explore and expand their "mental/personal/conceptual" space with lines (tapes on the floor and the walls) and sounds in the space. A reproduced soundscape & landscape from their inner and/or outside worlds that could reflect their state of mind and being during the pandemic...

  • They then could enter to their peers' spaces, with their permission, to interact and sonically elaborate around other worlds.

  • The participants were asked to bring a significant object from their pandemic experience to the workshop, and to share their stories with the group. The group musically interpreted each object and added variations, meanings and finally built collective solidarity around the objects through acts of intersensory listening and sound making.
